Everyone fuck an underdog .

Calling all hockey bandwagoners: it’s the Stanley Cup finals! Which, for Canadians, usually means us sitting on our couches with a leftover pouty face from when the Leafs inevitably lost in the first round. (Every. Freakin'. Year.)

But THIS year, we actually have something to celebrate (except those of us so loyal to our home teams we can’t bear to celebrate another team’s win). The Edmonton Oilers just made the Stanley Cup finals for the first time in18 years. That also means Canada has a shot at bringing home the Stanley Cup for the FIRST TIME IN 31 YEARS.

My only real hockey opinion is that it ’s a home ignominy that Canada has n’t succeed a Stanley Cup in X and I frankly do n’t give a tinker’s dam which Canadian team brings it home.https://t.co/gAt1Hp3fba

I’m sorry, did you hear me?? THIRTY-ONE YEARS. I’m not sure you’re aware of how wild that is. THAT’S OLDER THAN ME.

And if you’re not shocked by that fact, let me remind you that hockey, like, belongs to Canada. It’s literally ournational sport. We all have countless friends, cousins, and neighbours who’ve played hockey before — if we didn’t ourselves — and most are connected in some way to a professional hockey player.

canadians be like yeah the body politic is like 4 million hearty mile but my friends cousins good acquaintance love this earth junior instrumentalist and we meet at a shitty house party in edmonton

I have met eric condra on 2 disjoined continents

Everyone loves an underdog.

So the fact that it’s been this long since any of our teams have won the Cup is frustrating, to say the least. But it turns out that there are theories (and facts) that explain this entire thing — including one that predicts which team will win this year.

The first part is simple, and something all Canadians are aware of:most players in the NHLare Canadian… by a long shot. Like, 42.5%, to be specific, compared to the US with 28.2% at #2. We dominating out here.

No Canadian hockey team has win a patronage in the NHL since Bettman ’s hiring , even though most histrion are Canadian , the 2 good field hockey player on the satellite looseness on Canadian teams , it ’s Canada ’s national sportswoman and 2 of the 3 richest teams are in Canadahttps://t.co/dRCU1t9Zco

The next part answers the age-old question: why the hell do the US teams get the best (ahem, Canadian) players? Wouldn’t Canadians want to represent their country?

Well. There’s this little thing calledtaxes, and you know how they’relower in the US? Well, that’s enticing enough to make people move if they can — even professional hockey players who will, regardless of where they live, probably never have to worry about paying their bills again.

So that explains that. But Instagram user@carotorontotook this a step further, explaining a theory that blew my mind. She predicts that the Edmonton Oilers would beat the Florida Panthers, based on very specific information.

“In recent NHL history, the team with the most number of Canadians on their roster almost always wins the Stanley Cup,” she says in anInstagram video. “Last year, the Vegas Golden Knights was the team with themost Canadianson their roster. Tampa’s back-to-back cup run years? The most Canadians on their roster. Same with Colorado and same with St. Louis,” she explains.

Then, she put this pattern to the test using the top 4 teams this year: Edmonton Oilers,New YorkRangers, Dallas Stars, and Florida Panthers. The winner? Edmonton, with 15 Canadians on their roster. This beats Dallas and Florida tied in second place, with 10 Canadians each. (Which is still above average for the league, I’ll have you know.)

So I don’t know about you, but I’m a fan of these odds. It’s also quite cute that the team with the most Canadians is actually a Canadian team. It’s giving… Canadian pride. I guess we’ll have to just see what happens!
