Another look atGladiator IIis here, and oh are we entertained.
On Tuesday, the first trailer for director Ridley Scott’s sequel to his 2000 filmGladiatordropped. This follows first-look photos published inVanity Fairlast week.
As you’ll recall, the 2000 film was a smash hit, starring Russell Crowe as the former Roman general Maximus, who is forced into slavery and determined to avenge his family’s murder.
The film also starredJoaquin Phoenixas the antagonistic ruler Commodus and Connie Nielsen as Lucilla, Maximus’s former love interest and Commodus’s older sister.
Of the three actors, Connie is the only one reported to be returning for the sequel.
This makes sense, asPaul Mescalstars in the new movie as Lucilla’s estranged son Lucius.
The sequel picks up years after the first movie and has a plot that harkens back to the first film.
Like Maximus years ago, Lucius is forced into slavery following a government overthrow.
He, too, becomes a gladiator seeking revenge.
Pedro Pascalplays the film’s main villain.
He’s Marcus Acacius, a general who led the government overthrow, which destroyed Lucius’s life as he knew it.
