暑い季節にぴったりの爽快な「グレープフルーツ」。しかしよく考えてみると、グレープ（ぶどう）のフルーツという名前はどういう理由で付けられたものなのでしょうか … ？ 英語でも「Grapefruit」という表記なので、日本特有の名前というわけでもなさそうなのです 。 すっぱくて爽快 ！ スーパーなどでもおなじみのグレープフルーツは、ジュースでも、そのままでも、ゼリーなどに加工してもおいしい人気のフルーツです 。 しかしよく考えてみると、グレープ（ぶどう）のフルーツという名前はどういう理由で付けられたものなのでしょうか … ？ 英語でも「Grapefruit」という表記なので、日本特有の名前というわけでもなさそうなのです 。 調べてみると、実のつけ方に理由がありました 。 「グレープ」という名前なのは、実り方が「ぶどう」に似ているから 金沢市の青果卸売業「丸果石川中央青果」公式サイトでは、その理由を「木に果実が実るときの様子がぶどうに似ているから」と解説しています 。 グレープフルーツは、18世紀に西インド諸島バルバドスで、文旦の突然変異として発見されました。果実が一本の枝にまとまってたくさん成り、その様子がぶどうの房に似ていることから「グレープ」フルーツと呼ばれるようになったそうです 。 スーパーで並んでいる様子しか見たことがないと、想像もつかないような理由ですね ！ ちなみに同サイトによると寒い地での栽培には向いていないため、現在、日本で食べられているグレープフルーツは100％輸入品。そのうち3分の2はアメリカ・フロリダ産となっているそうです 。 おいしいグレープフルーツの見分け方として、「手に取ってみてずっしりと重みが感じられ、皮に張りがあるものを選びましょう」と紹介しています 。 フロリダ産の場合は表皮が傷ついたように見える「サビ果」になりやすいのが特徴ですが、中身に問題は全くないそうです 。 皆さんはどんな食べ方が好きですか ？ 気軽にコメントで教えてくださいね 。 おすすめ記事
