Miley Cyrus is one of those rare performers who’ve proven themselves wildly successful as an actor and singer.

She started in Hollywood as an actor, notably on the hit Disney Channel showHannah Montanaand a subsequent 2009 film.In the early 2010s, she also starred in movies likeThe Last Song,LOL, andSo Undercover.

Still, Miley has occasionally dipped her toes back into acting, with spot appearances or voice work on the showsBlack MirrorandHuman Resourcesand the filmsGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2andDrive-Away Dolls.

Turns out, Miley does want to get back into acting again, but it isn’t exactly so simple. In aW magazine interviewpublished Monday, she revealed what would need to happen for her return to the screen.

“So, I would like to act again,” Miley said before noting that she thinks it’d be hard for audiences to see past her major personality.

“But the role would really need to be right, since it’s kind of hard for people to see past me and buy into a character,” Miley continued. “The character would either need to be an extension of myself, or someone — or something — with a personality that can conquer my own.”

“I would need a character that is bigger than me,” she said.

Thankfully, there is a precedent for pop singers to star in major movies or TV shows after proving themselves as musicians. This includes Lady Gaga, who garnered an Oscar nomination for Best Actress forA Star Is Bornand has since starred inHouse of Gucciand the upcoming filmJoker: FolieàDeux.

In the ’80s, Cher’s acting career took off with the filmsSilkwood,Mask, andSuspect. She went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress in 1988 forMoonstruck.

In the ’90s, Whitney Houston starred in major films likeThe Bodyguard,Waiting to Exhale,The Preacher’s Wife, andCinderella.

Beyoncé has acted across genres, including comedy (Austin Powers in Goldmember,The Pink Panther), thriller (Obsessed), biography (Cadillac Records), and musicals (Dreamgirls,The Lion King).

If Miley were to pivot back to acting, she’d join other former child actors who became major musical artists before re-embracing acting. This includes Selena Gomez, who has starred in the hit whodunnit comedy seriesOnly Murders in the Buildingsince 2021.

There’s also Ariana Grande, who will star in her first leading film role whenWickedhits theaters in November.

Of course, Queen Latifah, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Harry Styles, Lenny Kravitz, Ricky Martin, and many other famous musicians have succeeded as both singers and actors. Here’s hoping someone read Miley’s interview and is working on the perfect script for her right now.
