“ I never meant to connote that I did n’t get the part for nepotistic reason — I think I wholly did . ”

Maya’s parents — in case you didn’t know — are actorsUma ThurmanandEthan Hawke, who were married from 1998 to 2005.

In addition to racking up a considerable acting CV over the past six years or so, Maya also just released her third studio albumChaos Angel— and in a new interview withthe Times of London, she addressed how she’s benefited from having famous parents.

She also reflected on whether her accomplishments through nepotistic connections have been “deserved.” “‘Deserves’ is a complicated word," she said.

“There are so many people who deserve to have this kind of life who don’t, but I think I’m comfortable with not deserving it and doing it anyway. And I know that my not doing it wouldn’t help anyone.”

Maya went on to acknowledge that she occupies “a lucky place” and has a “really honest and positive” relationship with her parents — and she even cracked a joke about why nepotism was the ultimate path for her career.

“I saw two paths when I was first starting, and one of them was: change your name, get a nose job and go to open casting roles.”
