“ When people take themselves so seriously , I kind of shut down . "

Chloë Sevigny is the epitome of cool. She’s been this way forever.

Chloë’s amassed an incredible filmography over her multi-decade career. One of her many roles was in the iconic 2000 filmAmerican Psychoas Patrick Bateman’s secretary, Jean.

Of course, you don’t even need me to tell you thatChristian Baleportrayed Patrick himself — the infamous, murderous protagonist.

Now, if you’ve seen the film, you know that Christian and Chloë share a few scenes together. (If you haven’t, don’t worry — we’re not gonna get into spoiler territory here.)

You’ve also probably heard about Christian’spenchant for Method actingat this point in his career. He does it alot.

Well, during a recentVanity Fairroundtable withAmerican Psychocostar Josh Lucas, Chloë revealed that she wasn’t too hot on Christian’s immersive acting process.

“I was trying to respect his process, which I found challenging because I’m very gregarious and silly and goofy, unbeknownst to the general public,” she explained.

“When people take themselves so seriously, I kind of shut down, even though I take my work very seriously and I love acting and whatnot.”

Chloë explained that, when it came to being Christian’s scene partner, she wanted “a little more generosity to make myself feel more at ease, which is my own ego.”

“It was a really challenging dynamic for me, but I don’t think that I thought he was bad. I was just kind of confused, like, ‘Why aren’t you being social?’"

Chloë also explained that, at the time, she had no idea what Method acting even was. “I wasn’t even that aware of what the Method thing was,” she recalled. “I never had any formal training; I think I was just kind of ‘fake it until you make it.’”

“But the whole Method thing, I was like, What even is this approach? It was very intimidating.”
